Before you run out and get your flu shot, you might want to think about who you're letting inject you. Where did these vaccines come from? How do we know what's in them? Whether they'll work? Whether they're serving some other purpose? Genetic markers. Biological or chemical testing. You never know.
I'm pretty turned off to getting mysterious shots, I'll take my chances getting sick.

In other news, I've heard about the recent occurrences of petrification. If you've got any information on them and wouldn't mind sharing it, I'd like to hear it.

Do we have any more information on the explosion the other day?

No, people panic because an army of cybermen who want to 'upgrade' you or a gang of weevils looking to rip out your throat and eat you is terrifying. And we don't know what's going to be coming next. There's all of space and time to contend with, and how can we prepare people for every possible eventuality when we don't even know what might be next? How do you convince people to keep living normal lives if they've the knowledge that there are constant threats from beings so far advanced or so numerous or so plain alien that some days it's pure luck we manage to keep the world from ending at all?

I'm not saying we should try and convince everyone who believes in aliens that they aren't real. But it's hard enough -- it was hard enough just to maintain control of the Rift and manage the threats that got through, without having to deal with public paranoia and misinformation and souvenir hunters and vigilantes and...it'd be chaos.

Not all leaders are like that. Some of them want to do good, protect people. Some of them are worth believing in.

You lived in Cardiff we'd have probably wound up recruiting you. If it were only a matter of keeping secrets, that would be different. I agree, I don't think you should necessarily lie to people. But there are only five of us, and a great bloody Time Rift hanging over our heads like a beacon. Not to mention all the things it likes to just drop on our doorsteps. It's a war, and I know it's not fair to fight a war and keep people in the dark, but I don't think we'd have a chance if we didn't.

People like that, what you're talking about...those are the enemies too. I'm glad your world has someone trying to set things right.

Well, Jack did recruit Gwen because she'd seen us during an investigation and tracked down our secret hidden lair.

...It really was hidden, too. Underground and everything. And of course I'll tell you about the Rift sometime, but only if you promise to trade story for story.

You sounds a bit like Jack. I bet the reason you can't bring yourself to trust another person to lead you is because you're the one filling that role.

Well, the invisible lift helps, but yeah. It was probably a lot easier for her than it should have been. Though in our defense, she was a PC. And I'm always up for a good story. That's the problem with belonging to a secret organization. You can't talk to anyone about what you do. And last time I tried, I wound up almost have my heart eaten by a stranded alien disguised as a human.

Well I've always been a lot better at following orders than giving them. Probably I trust a little too easily though. The aforementioned heart-devouring alien being an excellent example of that.

Don't suppose you play pool, Agent Mulder?

[identity profile] warped-inside.livejournal.com 2008-11-08 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly! It's such a relief to say something about aliens, or temporal anomalies, or sonic modulators and not get stared at as though you've spent too much time at the science fiction conventions.

I've lost all my pool partners but Ianto. I could probably be convinced not to beat you too badly the first time, in exchange for some stories. I'll even buy the beer.

That one I'm not familiar with, but I can probably guess what sort of thing you're talking about.

Brilliant. I know a good place, just...let me know when you're free.
